Quick and Easy Basting

Get the low-down on an essential quilting prop

They’re every serious quilter’s best friend and accomplice, Susan Carr swears by them, and for a brief period of time they’re available at Blueberries for the bargain basement price of $57.50. We’re talking about basting guns, of course.

Also known as tagging guns, these handy little devices have been known to simultaneously cut quilting time in half and also save your back, two reasons alone why you should have at least one in your quilting toolbox. The main feature of a basting gun is the super fine needle, which shoots a 4mm H-tag through the layers of a quilt and holds it together while being sewn

“Its major advantages are that it saves your back and dramatically reduces time spent on basting,” explains Susan. “It’s also good for your quilt as there are no entry and exit points from the pins.”

Susan will be holding several 20-minute basting gun tutorials, more details will be available in a coming Midweek Moment, so watch this space. She will be walking people through its different uses and explaining its advantages of using it over more traditional methods of basting quilts. People will be invited to get up and have ‘hands-on’ practice if they’re interested.

Susan has accumulated a range of handy basting gun tips that can only come from extensive personal experience. Go to www.littleredjug.blogspot.com to see what they are.

Mini Foundation Pieced Sampler by Anne Sommerlad

miniature-quilt-1-blog

(Finished size – 15 ½ x 18 inches)

This tiny wall hanging is made up of 20 traditional blocks. The catch is… they are each only 2 inches in size! The centre of the mini-quilt is surrounded by a 1 inch Flying Geese border.

Even though making such tiny blocks may appear daunting, (one Pineapple block contains 61 pieces of fabric!!), everyone who has attempted the project has been amazed at how easy it really is – thanks to the use of the Foundation Piecing technique.

Because of the size of the blocks, it is a great economy project, as it uses very little fabric, so  just dive into your scrap-basket!

This is an excellent project to use to learn Foundation piecing and the final result certainly has the “WOW” factor!!

It really is… Easy!!!

Book Review on A Baker’s Dozen by Susan Carr

baker-12

When was the last time you had a look at the fantastic range of books at Blueberries?

As the tutor at Blueberries I am constantly asked “ do you have any ideas on what I should do with this fabric?” or “can you help me choose a pattern?”. So we look at all the patterns available in the shop and discuss the options, however many quilters rarely consider buying a whole book. Ok books are expensive compared to one pattern, but, you are not getting just one design. Sometimes for the cost of 2 patterns you are getting up to 20 options in a good book. A book like this can be an inspiration for many years and many projects. But the really good thing about a book is that you will have full details on the techniques required for the designs that you won’t get in a paper pattern.

I was so impressed by a couple of books that arrived in the shop that I just felt I had to share my thoughts with you.

A Bakers Dozen, 13 quilts from jelly rolls, layer cakes, and more. By That Patchwork Place.
This is a terrific book. It covers a large range of exciting designs for the uses of layer cakes, jelly rolls, fat quarters, charm squares and more pre-cut fabrics. The advantage of the pre-cuts for me is the great range of fabrics they contain, less cutting, and best of all for me, very few leftovers.

It amazes me how many different designs are now available for using pre-cuts. This book has both traditional and moderns designs. There is a variety of designs that appeal to adults and children, and the options are great using piecing and appliqué. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are clear large colour diagrams for each step making the process so easy to follow. Best of all there are cutting instructions for every design if you are using your stash and not a pre-cut fabric. So this is a versatile book that is so useful especially the great technique references.

Next time you are in the shop or looking for that special design for that fabric you just fell in love with, check out Blueberries great range of books. Books are a great investment.
